ALIVE INSIDE

A Story of the power of Music for People living with Dementia (brain failure)

Alive Inside is a story of music and memory in a 2014 documentary that follows social worker Dan Cohen and his nonprofit Music & Memory into nursing homes with a personalized music playlist for resident living with dementia.  The film showcases the profound effect music has on these individuals, often awakening them from confusion and isolation.  It won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival for its moving portrayal of music's power to restore a sense of self and combat memory loss when medicine fell short.

If you attempt to duplicate these results, understand that the choice of music is key to the results you will obtain. The best music to present to a person living with dementia is highly personalized, familiar music from their formative years (teens and early twenties). Because the brain's musical memory networks are deeply resilient and often remain intact despite cognitive decline, these sounds can spark awareness, reduce agitation, and unlock profound memories.

Music tied to an individual's teenage and young adult years triggers the strongest emotional memories.  For many current seniors, this includes the big band, Motown, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Frank Sinatra or the Beatles.

To calm anxiety or combat sundowning, use gentle, acoustic instrumentals without lyrics.  For daytime engagement, play upbeat golden oldies like Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" or Gene Kelly's "Singin' in the Rain." Choose songs that are familiar but avoid overly complex or overwhelmingly loud tracks.  Stick to ad-free sources so the music is not interrupted.

To brainstorm a personalized playlist:

  • What decade was your loved one in their late teens/ early twenties?

  • What genres or artists do they naturally gravitate toward?

  • What specific mood or times of day (e.g., morning, bathing, bedtime) are you hoping to use the music?
